Post subject: Safety certified communication bus

Hi,

I'm new to this forum. I would like if someone can guide me on the following:

I work in one of oil and gas companies in UAE. In our existing facilities, the interlock signals (casuing ESD shutdown) from Fire & gas (F&G) system to Emergency Shutdown system (ESD) are all hardwired.

Currently, I'm involved in designing a new complete platform with a new Emergency shutdown and Fire & Gas systems. These systems will be procured from one vendor and they will be SIL Certified system. I'm thinking to have the Emergency Shutdown controller and Fire & Gas controller communicating on the same bus. The communication bus will be a safety bus TUV certified to SIL 3. All the interlock signals between the ESD controller and Fire & Gas controller will be exchanged through this safety bus (i.e. no hardware link).

Can anyone advise me on the following:

1. Is the above design a good practice?
2. Who are the vendors who can supply safety systems (safety controllers (ESD + F&G), communication bus+HMI) which are a TUV Certified to SIL 3.
3. is there any issues that i need to be aware when specifying the above safety system architecture (i.e. ESD controller and F&G controller on the same safety communication bus)?

Your guidance is appreciated.

Regards,
Majid Al Braik

HI Majid

Nice to have you here and have these type of questions

Safety bus is very new concept.

Its not readily acceptable by all clients

However, its been tried and made proven with SIL certification.

So you should do that.

And i believe that this communication will be on redundant link.

There are few suppliers, honeywell and invensys i know......
